A group sorts your products into categories, such as "Memberships" or "Retail".
Put a product in a group with product_group_id. Product lists are sorted by group by default, and you can filter them with product_group_id[].
To stop offering a group, set active to false. The dashboard then leaves it out of its pickers. The API still accepts it on products.
